What do banks in the Lille area charge?

In France, each bank sets its own safe deposit box prices, based on the compartment's volume and the level of cover, and the service is in practice reserved for its customers. A national benchmark: a 30 to 35 dm3 compartment rents for between €100 and €150 per year, with basic cover of €30,000 to €40,000, according to a Panorabanques comparison quoted by 20 Minutes in July 2024.

Locally, Caisse d'Épargne Hauts de France, headquartered in Lille, publishes its « Conditions et tarifs » schedule dated 1 March 2026:

Safe deposit box rental at Caisse d'Épargne Hauts de France (schedule dated 1 March 2026)
Box volumePrice per year
Small volume (under 22 dm3)€250
Medium volume (22.7 to 38.2 dm3)€300
Large volume (over 44 dm3)€350

Source: official price schedule dated 1 March 2026, archived by MoneyVox. A 50% discount applies to holders of the Formule Optimal bundled offer. Service offered subject to branch availability.

Two takeaways: the price depends first on volume, then on the chosen level of cover; and you must ask your own branch about real availability, as not all of them still have free compartments.

What are the real prices on the other side of the border?

Across the French-Belgian border, in Dottignies (Mouscron), Gold & Silver Company publishes one public price per size: each size has its price, payable in advance:

Annual prices of private safe deposit boxes in Dottignies (Mouscron)
SizeHeightPrice per year
Small box100 mm€240
Medium box160 mm€280
Large box210 mm€300
Extra large box330 mm€350

All sizes measure 330 mm in width and 500 mm in depth. Prices payable in advance, for one year or more.

Alongside boxes rented under a name, there is a non-named formula: the « numbered » box, at €10 per month. With a numbered box, your valuables are not stored under your name: they rest under a number, in a shared storage space protected by the same system as the boxes and insured up to 10 million euros.

As with any rental, an identity document is shown at sign-up and payment is made in advance.

What about the other private operators?

The CitySafes network advertises boxes from €9.95 per month, without publishing a detailed price schedule by size on its Belgian site; its FAQ states that signing up requires a European identification document and an IBAN bank account.

How do payment, renewal and exit from the contract work?

The annual rent falls due up front, for one year or more, and you can settle it by bank transfer or in cash within the legal limits. With a transfer, the key and access to the box follow the actual crediting of the amount.

One month before the term, an invitation to renew arrives: everything can then be settled from home, by email and transfer, or at the counter. To leave, a registered letter is enough, at least ten days before expiry; any year started remains due, as the contract is annual and paid in advance.

Price questions, figures answered

Which price schedule do banks in the Lille area publish?

Caisse d'Épargne Hauts de France, headquartered in Lille, published three prices by volume on 1 March 2026:  €250 per year for a small volume (under 22 dm3),  €300 for a medium volume (22.7 to 38.2 dm3) and  €350 for a large volume (over 44 dm3). A 50% discount applies with the Formule Optimal bundled offer. Other networks share their prices in branch, the service being reserved for their customers.

What are the prices and dimensions of the four sizes in Dottignies?

Small box at €240 per year (100 mm high), medium box at €280 (160 mm), large box at €300 (210 mm) and extra large box at €350 (330 mm). All measure 330 mm in width and 500 mm in depth. Each size has its price, payable in advance, for one year or more. These are the published grid prices, and rental is open to all nationalities, with no bank account required.

Does the numbered formula require an identity document?

Yes: an identity document is shown at sign-up, as with any rental. The formula is non-named: your valuables rest under a number, not under your name, in a shared storage space, protected by the same system as the boxes and insured up to 10 million euros. Payment is made in advance, and signing takes twenty to thirty minutes.

Why do safe deposit box prices vary so much between providers?

Because the rent depends on two dials: the compartment's volume and the level of cover. For the same 30 to 36 dm3 format, the price rises to €240 per year with €150,000 of cover, and to €350 per year for a value of 1.5 million euros, as the magazine 60 Millions de consommateurs detailed, quoted by 20 Minutes. The published Dottignies price list assigns each size an annual price from €240 to €350.

How is the rental paid?

The annual rent falls due up front, for one year or more, and can be settled by bank transfer or in cash within the legal limits. With a transfer, the key and access to the box wait until the amount is credited. Renting requires no bank account: the contract depends on no banking relationship, for an individual or a professional alike.

How do renewal and cancellation work?

One month before the term, an invitation to renew reaches you: you can settle everything from home, by email and transfer, or come to the counter. To leave, a registered letter is enough, at least ten days before expiry.
